visitors receive when they step through your door. Before a word is spoken, an entrance quietly introduces the personality of the home and the people who live there.
I often think of an entrance as the opening chapter of a book. It sets the tone for everything that follows. Whether your home is classic and elegant, relaxed and welcoming, or contemporary and sophisticated, the entrance hall offers the first glimpse into your story.
Over the years, I have stood in many entrance halls, and it is seldom that this space is first on the renovation list. Most homeowners naturally focus
on the heart of the home where daily life unfolds. Yet, as these rooms are transformed and renewed, the enthusiasm often spreads to the entrance hall. Suddenly, the space that was once simply passed through becomes an opportunity to create something beautiful, welcoming, and memorable. It is often at this stage that homeowners begin to recognize the important role the entrance plays in completing the story of their home.
From a practical perspective, entrances serve as transition spaces. They help us move from the outside world into the comfort of our homes. and the pace of life begins to slow. A well-planned entrance creates order and makes daily routines easier. Even in smaller homes where space is limited, thoughtful planning can make a remarkable difference.
Beyond functionality, entrances have a significant emotional impact. There is something comforting about walking through the front door that feels inviting and well considered. Soft lighting, a beautiful console table, a favourite piece of artwork, fresh flowers, or even a treasured family photograph can instantly create a sense of

An entrance is also an opportunity to establish flow within a home. The placement of furniture, the direction of movement, and the visual connection to adjacent spaces all influence how comfortable a home feel. A cluttered or poorly planned entrance can create tension and confusion, while a balanced and welcoming entrance encourages a natural flow throughout the house.
Recently, we had the privilege of transforming a large double-volume entrance hall from an open space with characterless walls into a timeless and elegant welcome that embraces you the moment you step inside. In this project, wall paneling provided the perfect foundation, complemented by timber slats and carefully selected wallpaper.
A soft, neutral colour palette was chosen to create continuity with the adjoining rooms and establish a sense of calm from the moment of arrival.
The staircase was dressed with carpeting to add warmth and comfort under foot, while textured curtains softened the scale of the space.
The original chandelier was replaced with a contemporary statement piece, creating a striking focal point that draws the eye upward and celebrates the impressive volume of the room. Finally, the front door was repainted in a lead-black colour and the hardware replaced with solid bronze.
Some of the entrance halls here are simply defined zones within a larger living space, while others were treated as individual design projects in their own right. Regardless of their size, each one demonstrates how thoughtful design can elevate an often-overlooked area and create a memorable first impression.
