A new year lies ahead, and perhaps you are already considering a renovation project somewhere in your home, or planning to refresh a room entirely. I’d like to share a similar project that was recently completed. It follows
on from my previous blog, where I took you through the renovation of the ensuite. Today, we look at how the master bedroom was transformed to form a cohesive unit with the ensuite.
The inspiration for the colour palette came from two elements we wanted to retain: the timber flooring and the blue pattern of the loose rug. From there, we created a neutral combination of soft grey-blue, caramel, bone-white and touches of bronze—a palette that introduces calmness, warmth and an earthy sense of balance. The curtain fabric, an open-weave texture in a gentle grey, frames the room beautifully and wraps the space in a cocoon-like feeling of comfort.
For the wall behind the bed, I selected wallpaper with a rhythmic, understated design. It anchors the area and serves as a serene focal point. Because the master bedroom is generously sized, I was able to identify and define several zones. To complement the wallpapered wall, we designed a contemporary headboard, paired with oak bedside tables and a long ottoman custom-made for the
client. An ottoman at the foot of the bed is always practical—whether to place loose cushions or to sit on while fastening shoes—but it also adds balance and a sense of completion to the bed. I often find that ottomans can look bulky and disrupt the visual proportions, but in this case, the scale was just right.
A pause area is, in my view, essential in any bedroom. The client sourced a second-hand Bergere chair, and we gave it new life with a bold check-pattern fabric that simply radiates comfort.
I was delighted to find a petite side table with a bronze base and marble top—perfect for a book or a cup of tea. A copper floor lamp adds a soft glow, even when used as ambient lighting in the evenings.
The third zone is the entrance to the room. The wall directly opposite the doorway was ideal for the credenza—used here as a bookshelf—paired with a decorative mirror. A large mirror is always practical for that final glance before heading out.
The accessories for this project were chosen with great intention, ensuring simplicity and a calm, cohesive look. We kept the décor understated: a single elongated blue velvet scatter cushion and a soft light-blue textured throw on the bed. A few plants, selected books, and of course Ollie, the Scottish Terrier on his special cushion, complete the interior of this master bedroom.
