There is something deeply comforting about a home that holds stories—quiet reminders of where we’ve been, who we love, and the life that unfolds within our walls.
Many of us own furniture, artworks, or even simple keepsakes that are deeply meaningful to us, but which have weathered over time. These pieces are part of the heart of a home; they are part of you, just like your home and the spaces where you and your loved ones live. They carry your identity.
For those of us who find it difficult to part with sentimental items, there is a beautiful opportunity to give new life to the pieces we hold onto. During a remodel, these items can simply be given a new “jacket”—and just like that… what is old becomes new again.
Curtains
A good example is curtains. Adding a contrasting section at the bottom gives them character, with a wide variety of colours and textures to choose from. What matters most is that it ties in with the overall décor concept of the room. I personally prefer placing the contrast at the hem, as it is more practical, but it can just as easily be added at the top, or even along the sides of the curtains.
Lighting
The same applies to lighting, such as floor lamps and table lamps. If the base or stand is still in good condition, a new lampshade can completely revive the piece. Antique shops are often ideal places to browse—I have discovered exceptional solid brass wall sconces in such spaces, which added an undeniable elegance to a project.
Furniture
Furniture is often reupholstered, and I have, many times, restored and repurposed vintage and antique pieces—not only for their value, but because the quality of craftsmanship is truly remarkable. There are currently so many beautiful fabrics available, with a strong trend towards materials that are easy to clean and both child- and pet-friendly. It is well worth investing in these when making your selection.
More Ideas
One project that will always stay with me involves restoring a small antique table. It held great sentimental value for the owners, and with careful sanding and new varnish, the result was breathtaking. I would love to share a photograph of it.
In another case, there was a leather sofa rich with patina, carrying precious memories of a life shared by its owners. We chose to honour the piece and built the entire décor concept of the project around it. In the end, the sofa became the focal point, and its rustic charm brought a unique beauty and atmosphere to the space.
As with everything, picture frames can sometimes feel outdated. With a new frame and mount board, your artwork can easily be refreshed to look current and refined once more.
