Hello friends!
It is officially spring and as the weather turns warm, we all yearn for outside entertainment and reconnect with nature. Whether we plan a picnic in the park, a braai at a friend’s house or dine on a restaurant patio, eating outdoors is a whimsical adventure that enhances the dining out experience,
and celebrates the idea that you can find a dining room table anywhere you go — as long as there’s good company and conversation. It’s an experience that places importance on mindful moments, simple decor, and delicious food and drink – all in good company.
I would like to share some tips with you on how to create the perfect outdoor space with a few essentials.
Define Your Space
Work with your space to choose the best setup; do you have a garden or a balcony. Think about how you want to use the area—whether it’s a dining space for hosting meals, a cozy spot to relax, or even a little garden for growing fresh veggies. By clearly separating these areas, you’ll create a well-organized and versatile outdoor living space.
You can enhance the definition of each zone with touches like planters, outdoor rugs, or privacy screens. These elements not only help to visually divide the space but also keep everything feeling connected and harmonious.
Invest in Quality outdoor Products
Premium outdoor items are designed to withstand the elements. For a smaller area consider a small table, few chairs and an umbrella. You could also look at a picnic table. For a balcony, a small cocktail table and just one or two chairs will work.
Plants and flowers for Privacy and Beauty
Greenery is essential for creating privacy and shade. Plants are a natural aesthetic that softens the environment. Fast-growing hedges or climbing plants on trellises offer excellent privacy solutions while adding charm to your yard. My absolute favourite is the jasmine climber. Their scent is just heaven, although some people are sensitive to that.
You can also add potted plants to turn your outdoor space into a lush, inviting retreat.
Comfortable Seating
Comfort is key. Make sure your outdoor chairs are durable and waterproof. Adding cushions and throws will boost the coziness while also giving the space a stylish, personal touch.
Don’t settle for a run-of-the-mill outdoor space. Consider incorporating geometric shapes and designs that bring a touch of modern charm to any space. Whether it’s a geometric rug, patterned throw pillows, or an intricate garden sculpture, these pieces will add a unique and stylish element to your outdoor oasis.
Set the mood
Nothing beats outdoor dining, whether it is hosted as brunch or supper under the stars. Good lighting can transform this into a magical event once the sun sets. Use a combination of string lights, solar-powered lamps, and LED candles to create a warm, inviting glow. Build-in braais are popular, but if your space is limited opt for a portable, compact braai which can be set up and packed away when not in use. They are also small enough to fit into a smaller space and do not require any installation.
Style the table
If you do not have an outdoor setting, transform your patio into a French bistro perfect for a romantic date night with a small bistro set as the anchor. Dress the table in a checkered tablecloth, add fresh flowers and candles as well as a rug beneath the table for added comfort. Bring out your glass crockery, wine glasses and linen servettes; that makes the dining-out experience that much more special.
Plan the menu
Creating an outdoor dining menu at home in South Africa can be a delightful experience, especially with the country’s diverse culinary influences. There is a limitless variety of options to make your experience unique, from cheese platters to traditional braais, Cape Malay meals, fresh salads complemented with our great wines, and delectable sweets to cap the feast. Enjoy the moment and make your outdoor dinner party one to remember!
